FITNESS TIP OF THE WEEK Monday January 4, 2010
Health Q & AFitness Magazine.com - July/August 2009
Q: Sometimes I feel woozy when I'm jogging on the treadmill or riding on the stationary bike. Should I be worried?
A: "An occasional feeling of lightheadedness is probably nothing to be concerned about," says neurologist Ronald J. Tusa, M.D., Ph.D., a member of the American Academy of Neurology. You may be experiencing gym-induced motion sickness. "When your legs are moving forward but you're not going anywhere, you create a sensory mismatch that can cause dizziness," he says. This is especially true for migraine sufferers and for women approaching menopause. (Blame it on hormones.) Try jogging or biking outside and see if this solves your problems. If not, and your head spinning is accompanied by nausea, talk to your doc about a bone check. A new study found that people with low bone density may be more likely to have vertigo, an inner-ear imbalanc that causes feelings of dizziness.
